NSW: Plan to confiscate cars of speeding P-platers

05 Jan 2009 5:09 AM

A plan to confiscate for three months .. the cars of P-platers caught driving more than 20 kilometres an hour over the speed limit .. will be put to the NSW government.

The head of the police traffic command .. Superintendent JOHN HARTLEY .. says he'll push the proposal after two serious crashes involving P-platers at the weekend .. one of which resulted in the death of a 15-year-old Bondi girl.

Mr HARTLEY says he's already spoken to the Roads and Traffic Authority about confiscating the cars of P-platers caught doing more than 20 kilometres over the limit.

He says a curfew on P-plate drivers .. and other tough measures introduced in 2006 .. were not enough to stop the road carnage involving inexperienced drivers.

Already street racers can have their cars confiscated . and the government under former premier MORRIS IEMMA adopted proposals to allow cars to be crushed .. although not one car has yet been dented.

More than 300 cars were confiscated by police last year.

NSW Roads Minister MICHAEL DALEY has left the door open to the confiscation proposal .. saying he's happy to look at anything that changes the behaviour of young people on the road.
